Healthy Learning Academy is an excellent school. My daughter had an incredible experience at this school and is now thriving in gifted classes at the middle school level. If you truly care about your kids education and are willing to get a little dirty by helping your kid learn, this is without a doubt one of the best public schools in the country. If you want to drop off your kid and use this school as a glorified daycare, my advice to you is not to enroll your kid. One of the major keys to this school success is, as a parent you will have to participate in your kids learning. I truly believe this is one the reasons why this is the highest rated school in the county and possibly the state. They educate the whole child, not only academically but socially and athletically.
My two boys only attended HLA for 2 years but everyone there became family. Thank you again for all you did to make my husband's last year's memorable to my boys.
We waited a full year to get in to this school because the philosophy is one I believe in. You cannot find a better educational, emotional or physical environment for your child than that of what HLA provides. Yoga, morning mile, sign language, gardening, going green, conflict resolution and core values are all offered in this holistic school, which also happens to be a grade A school regarding curriculum and testing. The vibe is calm, supportive and caring. HLA is the best thing that has happened to us since moving to Florida! We are on our second year here, and plan to finish elementary school here.
Unless you have the ability to dedicate 100% of your time and energy to facilitating the operation of HLA (not ONLY your child's education) Avoid this school like the PLAGUE! There are annual Mandatory volunteer hours as well as Mandatory Social gatherings (starting around 6pm in the middle of the week) If you are a working parent and not able to meet all of HLA's strictly enforced rules, your child will be SINGLED out by Ms. Egan and become a TARGET of her constant criticism. This happened to my Son, who developed an Anxiety Disorder, because of the way Ms. Egan treated him. My son was "kicked-out" of HLA, as a 5th grader, with less than TWO MONTHS till graduation, because I was unable to attend the Social Gatherings, even though I (completed Volunteer Hours) and explained to Ms. Egan my schedule did not allow for this. I am a very Hand-on and involved Mom, however, HLA takes things WAY TO FAR!!
Love this school. My son is going to 4th grade, and has been there since K. There are expectations set of every family. It can be demanding, but everything that I needed to do as a parent to ensure my son has a spot at the school was explained, and I accepted the responsibility. The environment is very positive, and I can tell that all the children there are bright and always eager to learn new things in unconventional ways. It is a very good school, and the experience can be great for parents as long as they remember the responsibilities they committed to at the start of the school year.
